The Japanese language it is difficult to master for foreign people, especially if you don’t know what or how to learn. The time to master will depend on many factors such as individual abilities, motivation, environment and the materials offered.
Some individuals has the opinion that attend at an language university is the best way to study, others think that individual study at your own pace it is the best way, or living in the country of the language wished to study will be the most effective way for learning.
Unlike another language, the Japanese language has a three style of writing which should be the priority in the process learning. First the students should learn the Kana system hiragana and katakana accompanied by the pronunciation.
After learning this, you should start to learn the basic grammar before attempting to learn the most difficult writing system -Kanji. This are Chinese characters which have two styles of reading using the combination of the Kana system:平仮名（ひらがな）and 片仮名（カタカな）.Are more than 6000 characters but for be able to understand the speaking in a honored manner or to be able to read a Japanese newspaper you should master the 2000 Joyo kanji, which are the official kanji taught in the secondary schools.
A best way to understand the writing and to be able to read or speak, don’t learn with Romanji. The system is used only by foreigners and will be difficult to understand, loosing a precious time.
All this steps should be done with learning materials in Japanese language, for example, think that you are a child in the elementary school. You must start from zero, studying Japanese with Japanese writing, grammar, the natives thinking, everything natural.
Buy children books and read a lot. Try to use your knowledge communicating in Japanese if you have the opportunity making usage of every skill.
Because the language learning is depending on the motivation and the reason, the Japanese language has a test for checking the proficiency level, which will help learners to see their levels and improve their skills. This is the JLPT (The Japanese Proficiency Language Test) with four levels of difficulty.
The next step is to master the grammar, at first the basic one and after to study the intermediary one followed by the advanced one.
For improve the listening skills a best way is, if you can’t come in Japan, to watch Japanese movies in Japanese. This will help to understand the grammar and the pronunciation.
Another step and the most important and difficult in the same time, not only for learners is to master, is learning the “honorifics”. The Japanese language has at least four levels of politeness, determined by a variety of factors such as social position, job, age or even psychological state, difficult to fully master, but necessarily because you will use and hear often.
Japanese language has also many dialects but you should learn the Kanto dialect which is the standard one.
As many other languages it will be a challenge to learn the Japanese language but learners should not lose their confidence and try to enjoy the process.
